Q1Synth: A Quantum Computer Musical Instrument

نویسندگان

چکیده

This paper introduces Q1Synth, an unprecedented musical instrument that produces sounds from (a) quantum state vectors representing the properties of a qubit, and (b) its measurements. The is presented on computer screen (or mobile device, such as tablet or smartphone) Bloch sphere, which visual representation qubit. performer plays by rotating this sphere using mouse. Alternatively, gesture controller can be used, e.g., VR glove. While rotated, continuously changing sound produced. has ‘measure key’. When activates key, generates program (also known circuit) to create current vector. Then, it sends over cloud for processing, is, measuring, in computing terminology. subsequently returns measurement, also rendered into sound. Currently, Q1Synth uses three different techniques make sounds: frequency modulation (FM), subtractive synthesis, granular synthesis. explains how works details implementation. A setup developed performance, Spinnings, with networked instruments reported. Spinnings are examples creative practices open doors new application pathways technology. Additionally, they illustrate emerging technology leading approaches design creativity.

Computer Models for Musical Instrument Identification

A particular aspect in the perception of sound is concerned with what is commonly termed as texture or timbre. From a perceptual perspective, timbre is what allows us to distinguish sounds that have similar pitch and loudness. Indeed most people are able to discern a piano tone from a violin tone or able to distinguish different voices or singers. This thesis deals with timbre modelling. Specif...

Laptap: Laptop Computer as a Musical Instrument using Audio Feedback

Laptap is a laptop-based, real-time sound synthesis/control system for music and multimedia performance. The system produces unique sounds by positive audio feedback between the on-board microphone and the speaker of a laptop computer. Users can make a variety of sounds by touching the laptop computer in several different ways, and control their timbre with the gestures of the other hand above ...

An Integrated Approach to Computer-based Musical Instrument Design

In recent years a large number of new computer-based musical instruments have been created. While a number of these have implemented a degree of non-audio feedback as a performance aid (which generally takes the form of either haptics or visuals), the majority have tended to focus specifically (and perhaps understandably) on the audio output, and have neglected other forms of feedback. This pap...

MelodyMorph: A Reconfigurable Musical Instrument

I present MelodyMorph, a reconfigurable musical instrument designed with a focus on melodic improvisation. It is designed for a touch-screen interface, and allows the user to create “bells” which can be tapped to play a note, and dragged around on a pannable and zoomable canvas. Colors, textures and shapes of the bells represent pitch and timbre properties. “Recorder bells” can store and play b...
